What Makes The Jetta and Jetta GLI Different
Two of the best sedans you can buy on the market today are the Volkswagen Jetta and its sportier sibling, the GLI, especially with a manual transmission. The standard Jetta, however, is no slouch and is one of the few cost-conscious cars still available. While more and more people want crossovers and SUVs, there are still plenty of buyers who want a quality four-door sedan that does many of the same things and gets better fuel economy.
What really sets both the Jetta and GLI apart, though? Well, there are quite a few differences that make each vehicle unique to a specific customer.

Meet The 2026 VW Jetta
The 2026 Volkswagen Jetta starts at $25,270 and is available in four trim levels: S, Sport, SE, and SEL. Each model is offered with a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder that produces 158 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, and it is perfectly paired with an 8-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission that maximizes both performance and efficiency. The EPA estimates that the Jetta will achieve 29 mpg in city driving, 40 mpg on the highway, and 33 mpg combined.

Welcome The 2026 Jetta GLI
The 2026 Jetta GLI swaps the 1.5-liter engine for a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that puts out 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, and offers just one trim, the Autobahn, which starts at $35,020. What that extra money gets you is a limited-slip differential that’s shared with the GTI, front brakes that are shared with the Golf R, and Multimode DCC and Adaptive Chassis Control that offer three different settings, making the GLI perfect for a highway cruise or a blast down some twisty back roads.

Two Transmissions, Great Fuel Economy
In a world where every car has an automatic, the 2026 Jetta GLI is holding firm on to its roots by still offering buyers a slick-shifting 6-speed manual transmission that doesn’t compromise performance or fuel economy, as evidenced by a review Bud Brown VW did with a customer and her 2019 GLI, where she was averaging 32 mpg over 100,000+ miles of ownership. Buyers can still opt for a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. The EPA says that, even though the GLI is the sportier Jetta, it still gets 26 mpg city, 36 mpg highway, and 29 mpg combined with the manual transmission. The automatic model drops just 1 mpg in both driving cycles.

The Need for Speed
In testing by Car and Driver, the GLI with the manual reached 60 mph in 6 seconds, while the dual-clutch sprinted to 60 in just 5.6 seconds.
A Classy Interior
No matter which you purchase, the Jetta or the GLI, you will get a fantastic car with standard LED headlights. S, Sport, and SE models get a Volkswagen Digital Cockpit instrument cluster with an 8-inch display, while SEL and GLI models get a 10.25-inch screen called Digital Cockpit Pro. All models also get a standard 8-inch infotainment display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and two USB-C ports that offer 45 watts of charging.

A Comfortable Interior to Live With
To keep you warm in colder climates, the Sport, SE, SEL, and GLI models get standard heated seats, with SEL models getting heated outboard rear seats. SEL and GLI models also get ventilated seats. Both cars also have 14.1 cubic feet of trunk space, which is more than some luxury cars from brands like Mercedes-Benz.
Excellent Standard Safety
More important than anything, though, is the inclusion of IQ.Drive as standard, which is an advanced suite of safety features that includes Travel Assist, Front Assist, Active Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Traffic Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Stop and Go, Lane Assist, and Emergency Assist.
