The 2025 Volkswagen Golf R is an Everyday “Super-Hatch”

Volkswagen defined what a true performance hatchback should be in the original Golf R32. Over time, the Golf R was refined for more performance, while maintaining the perfect ingredients of this exciting formula. That includes 4Motion all-wheel drive and a turbocharged 2.0-liter powerhouse motivating it.  

For 2025, Volkswagen updated the Golf R with a mid-cycle refresh, known as Mk8.5. This mid-cycle refresh starts underneath the hood where it counts. Power is up on the 2.0-liter turbocharged EA888 engine to 328 horsepower – up by 13. Torque remains at 295 pound-feet. The seven-speed DSG gearbox remains the only transmission available for the Golf R. That transmission and driveline can be set up for a choice of seven drive modes, including Special and Drift. The 4Motion all-wheel drive system continues to be an integral part of the Golf R.  

Dynamic Chassis Control is also standard. It gives you the option to set up the Golf R’s suspension to maintain performance through curves and on the highways across Missouri and Kansas.  

Enhancements were made on the exterior. That includes new LED headlamp units, an illuminated grille bar and logo, and a reshaped front bumper, all of which add more aggression to the exterior design. The two-tone 19-inch alloy wheels are now 20 percent lighter than in previous versions of the Golf R.  

You can also opt for two additional appearance packages for 2025—the Euro Style Package and the Black Edition. Euro Style includes previously unavailable exterior enhancements found only in Europe, including the Akrapovic titanium exhaust. The Black Edition adds darker trim elements from the headlamp housings and badges to the brake calipers.  

The Golf R is also equipped with the 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro instrument cluster, a full suite of IQ.DRIVE driver assistance features, and touch interfaces throughout the cabin.  

Motor1.com recently got a chance to experience the new Mk8.5 2025 Golf R. They proclaimed that it is “the most powerful hot hatch you can buy in America today.” They even call it a “super-hatch.” 

The main attraction of the Golf R has always been its driving dynamics. All said and done, Motor1.com concludes their time with the Mk 8.5 2025 Golf R by saying, “for all its performance bonafides, the Golf R remains the nicest of all the super hatches to live with.
