Cars.com Takes a “Quick Spin” in the 2026 Volkswagen Tiguan SEL R-Line Turbo
We knew we had something special when Volkswagen added a more powerful turbocharged engine to the 2026 Tiguan. The addition of the SEL R-Line Turbo added more adrenaline and luxury in a superbly engineered package.
Recently, Cars.com took a “quick spin” in the 2026 Tiguan SEL R-Line Turbo. Right off the bat, they said that this new trim level is “the solution to a [Volkswagen] Golf GTI owner’s dilemma when they need something bigger but still want something fun.”

The big attraction of the 2026 Tiguan SEL R-Line Turbo is the EA888 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. You can see this same engine across our lineup; however, they are tuned and engineered for different types of driving signatures. Other Tiguan models feature the 201-horsepower version of this engine, which strikes a balance between performance and efficiency. The 2026 SEL R-Line Turbo ratcheted up its power band to 268 horsepower.
To achieve that extra performance, Volkswagen delved deeper into the EA888 engine and made enhancements to meet those power numbers. In doing so, they added a larger turbocharger, stronger pistons, connecting rods, a nitrided crankshaft, variable timing for the exhaust valves, and oil cooling for the pistons as part of the enhancements made to the engine. Plus, they lowered the compression ratio to 10.5:1.
How did the uprated engine feel to the team at Cars.com? They said, “When you do pop it into gear and set off, the extra power from the 268-hp turbo engine will be immediately apparent. It moves the Tiguan smartly off the line, helps the SUV merge smoothly into traffic, and never feels like it’s hunting for the right gear to deliver the performance you want.”

While you enjoy that performance from the driver’s seat, you are surrounded by an interior that is getting a lot of praise from the media. As Cars.com states, “you’ll quickly be impressed at the upgraded interior. It’s genuinely comfortable in front and around back, with plenty of legroom and headroom in every seating position.”
They continue to praise the cabin’s quality by stating it is “excellent, with wood trim that adds a warm touch and leather that looks better than anything [Volkswagen] has offered in some time. And wonder of wonders, the [Tiguan] steering wheel has actual buttons, which is fantastic. I was pleased with the Tiguan Turbo before I even put it in gear.”
With that said, Cars.com concluded their “quick” time in the 2026 Tiguan SEL R-Line Turbo by saying that “the new Tiguan is an outstanding choice if you’re shopping for a compact SUV. It has a fully competitive feature set and an improved multimedia system that Volkswagen has continually made better. There are also top-quality materials, excellent space, and pricing that’s well in line with other SUVs in its class.”
