The 2026 Volkswagen Jetta GLI is seven years into its current MK7 generation. However, no reviewer or owner will say that it’s old or hasn’t aged gracefully. In a new review by Car and Driver, they say that age is but a number when it comes to the GLI and that it “helps us feel young again”.  

Transmission, Pricing, and Suspension 

Volkswagen has given the GLI a few updates over the years, which include subtle exterior enhancements, new exterior lighting, new wheels, and interior features. Buyers are able to option either a slick-shifting 6-speed manual transmission or an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Starting at $35,020, the GLI offers a great blend of sport, luxury, and comfort thanks to the Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC), which allows drivers to adjust the shocks from Comfort to Sport, or to a Custom mode that lets owners program their preferences for steering and chassis feel.  

A Great Engine for the GLI 

Powering the 2026 Jetta GLI is the third generation of the venerable EA888 turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, producing 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. This, according to Car and Driver, makes the GLI feel responsive and quick, and hauls the car to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds with the automatic and six seconds with the manual.  

Fuel Economy 

The EPA says the Jetta GLI can achieve 26 mpg in the city, 36 mpg on the highway, and 29 mpg combined. With its 13.2-gallon fuel tank, drivers will love that the GLI can drive 475 miles on the highway before needing to fill up. And since Volkswagen recommends 87 octane, you can save money at the pump, which is rare for a turbocharged engine these days.
