Charging The ID.4 Electric Vehicle

Volkswagen ID.4 Charging Levels

The new 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 electric vehicle requires only electricity to run this SUV. But, how much do you know about what it takes to keep it running?

The power source for the ID.4 comes from the battery pack that lies underneath the passenger area. The battery pack “fuels” the electric motor system making it run on the road. To keep this energy flow going, the battery pack must have enough charge to be sent to the electric motors.

When a battery pack runs low, you need to recharge it. That is where the plug comes in. It receives the charge from the Kansas City area’s electric grid into your ID.4. The battery pack is recharged with a higher level of “juice” to keep your ID.4 running.

How Long Does It Take to Charge an EV?

There are three different charging systems that your ID.4 can receive electricity from.

Level 1 Charging

Level 1 is from your normal household current at around 120 volts. A charging unit is supplied in every ID.4 to be plugged into your household receptacle and into your vehicle’s charging port. It takes about 80-100 hours to fully charge your battery at a rate of 2-3 miles of range per hour.

Level 2 Charging

The next charging step is called Level 2. This is where a higher capacity current of around 220 volts is used to charge your ID.4. You will find these at public charging stations around the Kansas City area and beyond. Or, you can get a household charging unit installed that is hard-wired into your home’s 220-volt current. Using a Level 2 system will take 8-10 hours to fully recharge the battery at a rate of 20-30 miles of range per hour.

Fast Charging

The fastest way to get your ID.4 recharged is known as Fast Charging. This is a heavy duty direct current system designed to recharge your vehicle’s battery using a high voltage direct current, up to 350 kilowatt-hours worth of “juice.” Using these high voltage chargers usually takes about 30 minutes to get up 70% of battery capacity, at a rate of 250 miles or more of range per hour.

The new ID.4 uses all three types of charging systems. In fact, when you buy a new ID.4, it comes with three years of unlimited charging on the ElectrifyAmerica DC Fast Charging network.
