The 2027 Volkswagen Atlas is the redesigned second-generation three-row SUV, with a 282-hp 2.0-liter turbo four, seating for up to seven and available 4MOTION all-wheel drive with a dedicated Snow mode. It comes in SE, SE with Technology, SEL R-Line and SEL Premium R-Line trims, and every one has heated front seats and a heated steering wheel.
Yes, especially with 4MOTION. Every 2027 Atlas trim offers 4MOTION all-wheel drive, it’s standard on the SEL R-Line and SEL Premium R-Line, and its Active Control selector has a Snow mode that can send up to 50% of the torque to the rear axle.
Olathe averages 13.8 inches of snow a year, and you’ll see nearly all of it from November through March. January’s the snowiest month at 3.9 inches, and that’s when you’ll want 4MOTION for an unplowed cul-de-sac or a slick driveway.
More than three-quarters of the year’s snow falls now, so 4MOTION and Snow mode earn their place.
March can still surprise you with a late snow.
No snow at all, so the 4MOTION decision doesn’t come up.
Snow can start in November, so sort out your tires and 4MOTION before it does.
4MOTION helps the Atlas pull away from a slick stop sign, and it’ll stay settled when you accelerate. It doesn’t shorten your stopping distance. Your tires handle that part. Before a storm drive, KDOT’s KanDrive (kandrive.gov or 511) shows road conditions and plow locations.
The 2027 Atlas is the second generation, and compared with the 2026 it’s got 13 more horsepower (282 vs 269), better EPA-estimated mileage (25 vs 23 mpg combined with FWD), a 15-inch touchscreen on every trim above the SE and a seventh airbag.
| Spec | 2026 Atlas | 2027 Atlas | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Horsepower | 269 hp | 282 hp | More pull merging with seven aboard |
| EPA MPG, FWD | 20 / 27 / 23 | 22 / 29 / 25 | Fewer stops on highway days |
| EPA MPG, 4MOTION | 20 / 26 / 22 or 19 / 25 / 21, by trim | 20 / 27 / 23, every trim | No mileage step down on the top trims |
| Ground clearance | 6.3 in | 6.5 in | A bit more room over slush |
| Width | 78.3 in | Same | Same garage door fit |
| Third-row legroom | 33.7 in | 34.1 in | Easier for teens in back |
| Cargo behind row 3 | 20.6 cu ft | 21.2 cu ft | Boots and coats with every seat up |
| Touchscreen | 12 in | 12.9 in (SE) or 15 in | Bigger map view |
| Airbags | 6 | 7 | New front center airbag |
| Towing, properly equipped | 5,000 lb (2,000 lb SE) | Same | Same trailer plans either year |
MPG is city / highway / combined, EPA-estimated. EPA estimates. Your mileage will vary and depends on several factors including your driving habits and vehicle condition.
On a run up I-35 and I-635 to Kansas City International Airport, about 50 minutes from our lot, you’ll get more power for merging, 29 mpg highway with FWD (EPA-estimated) and a little more room behind the third row for carry-ons. If you’d rather have a 2026, browse our remaining 2026 Atlas models.
For most Olathe families, the 2027 Atlas SE with Technology with 4MOTION is the one we’d pick. It’s got remote start, the 15-inch screen, a factory hitch rated for 5,000 lb and optional captain’s chairs.
Best for: you’ve got a garage, and you want seven seats with heat up front.
Best for: your Atlas sits in an open lot all day, and you don’t want to climb into a cold cabin.
Best for: second-row riders who’d like heated seats too, with 4MOTION you don’t have to option.
Best for: long highway trips, when you’ll want massage seats and a premium stereo.
For us, it’s remote start that separates the first two trims. After a December afternoon at Oak Park Mall, about 16 minutes up I-35, you can start an SE with Technology before you walk out to the lot, so the seat and wheel won’t be cold. The SE’s got prep for remote start, but it isn’t included.
The 2027 Atlas holds 21.2 cubic feet behind the third row, 55.9 cubic feet behind the second row and 95.4 cubic feet with both rows folded.
Headed to the 27-acre off-leash dog area at Heritage Park, about 20 minutes from us? Fold the third row and there’s room for a dog crate and a stroller, and you don’t have to option the power liftgate.
The 2027 Atlas third row has 34.1 inches of legroom and 38.3 inches of headroom. That’s room for kids and teens every day and adults on shorter trips, and the second row slides to share space with it.
| Row | Legroom | Headroom | Seats |
|---|---|---|---|
| First | 41.7 in | 41.3 in | 2 |
| Second | 37.6 in | 40.4 in | 3 on the 60/40 bench, or 2 captain’s chairs |
| Third | 34.1 in | 38.3 in | 2, split 50/50 |
For school carpools around Olathe, captain’s chairs let kids climb into the third row on their own, while the bench keeps a seventh seat for the extra rider. Adults won’t mind it for a trip across town, and taller ones’ll thank you for sliding the second row up a few inches.
Bring your car seats: three-across depends on the seats you’ve got. Bring them to your test drive and we’ll install them in the Atlas with you.

The 2027 Atlas is EPA-estimated at 25 mpg combined with FWD and 23 mpg combined with 4MOTION on regular fuel, and it tows up to 5,000 lb when properly equipped on the SE with Technology and up.
| Configuration | EPA MPG (city / hwy / combined) | Towing, properly equipped |
|---|---|---|
| SE, FWD or 4MOTION | 22 / 29 / 25 (FWD) or 20 / 27 / 23 (4MOTION) | 2,000 lb, aftermarket hitch |
| SE with Technology, FWD or 4MOTION | 22 / 29 / 25 (FWD) or 20 / 27 / 23 (4MOTION) | 5,000 lb, factory hitch standard |
| SEL R-Line and SEL Premium R-Line, 4MOTION | 20 / 27 / 23 | 5,000 lb, factory hitch standard |
EPA estimates. Your mileage will vary and depends on several factors including your driving habits and vehicle condition. Towing ratings need a braked trailer, a third-party trailer brake controller and the factory-installed hitch. Load and options may reduce them.
Every trim’s got the same 282-hp, 258 lb-ft turbo four and an 8-speed automatic with paddle shifters. If your family pulls a trailer of show gear to the Johnson County Fair in Gardner each summer, about 20 minutes south on I-35, weigh it loaded before you shop. Anything over 2,000 lb means you’ll skip the SE. If you don’t tow, any trim works.
Every 2027 Atlas has heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel and three-zone climate control, while remote start begins at the SE with Technology and heated second-row seats begin at the SEL R-Line.
Olathe averages 26.5 mornings in January with lows at or below 32°F, and January’s average low is 20°F. On mornings like that, you’ll feel a heated seat and wheel well before the cabin air warms up.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Heated and ventilated front seats | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Heated steering wheel | Yes | Yes | Yes, leather | Yes |

IQ.DRIVE is standard on every 2027 Atlas, so you’ll get Travel Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) Stop and Go, Lane Assist, Active Side Assist and Emergency Assist Plus on all four trims.
From our lot, it’s about 40 minutes up I-35 to Union Station in downtown Kansas City and about 43 out K-10 to Lawrence. In I-35 stop-and-go, ACC Stop and Go’ll bring the Atlas to a stop and pull away again. On the open stretch of K-10, you’ve got Travel Assist, which pairs adaptive cruise with help staying centered in your lane.
Travel Assist’s hands-on, so you’ll keep your hands on the wheel, and driver assistance features aren’t substitutes for attentive driving.
The 2027 Volkswagen Atlas is a strong fit for a Kansas City family that needs a third row and winter traction. It’s got 4MOTION on every trim, standard heated front seats and a heated wheel, and 34.1 inches of third-row legroom.
For a Kansas City family, the 2027 Volkswagen Atlas makes the most sense with 4MOTION, and it’s useful in spring too, when May and June each bring Olathe more than 5 inches of rain.
