Under the hood, the 2026 Jetta GLI is powered by a potent 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine, delivering an impressive 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. This powerful engine can be combined with the fun and control of a six-speed manual transmission, or the precision of a seven-speed dual-clutch DSG® automatic transmission with lightning-fast gear changes, either on its own or via manual gear changes from the large paddles located behind the steering wheel.  The 2026 Jetta GLI features a sport-tuned suspension that offers precise handling. The performance does not come at the expense of efficiency. With the manual transmission, the 2026 Jetta GLI can achieve an EPA-estimated rating of 26 mpg city, 36 mpg highway, and 29 mpg combined. This changes only slightly with the optional seven-speed DSG® dual-clutch automatic, which delivers 26 mpg city, 35 mpg highway, and 29 mpg combined. All ratings are based on regular unleaded fuel.

The 2026 Jetta GLI features a multi-link rear suspension, a rear anti-roll bar, and sport-tuned gas-filled shock absorbers. With stiffer springs and a 0.6-inch lower stance than the base Jetta model, the GLI sport suspension delivers a performance-focused ride without sacrificing comfort. You can also adjust the suspension via the DCC adaptive damping system to the level of comfort or firmness you prefer.

You will also find the VAQ (Vorderachsquersperre) limited-slip front differential system in 2026 Jetta GLI models. The VAQ system uses a multi-plate clutch and hydraulic pump to actively manage torque between the front wheels, reducing wheel spin and eliminating understeer. It boosts cornering grip by directing power to the wheel with more traction.

The 2026 Jetta GLI stops with a more robust braking system than other Jetta models. The system features 13.4-inch-diameter vented discs up front and 11.8-inch vented discs in the rear.

The 2026 Jetta GLI’s handling through the corners is aided by a progressive variable-ratio electric power steering system. This system helps determine the steering rate at different speeds, and maneuvers ideally require different steering rates. In this case, the teeth on the steering rack are spaced more tightly toward the center than on a standard rack. The lower steering ratio in the center means that the car can respond quickly when entering a turn, while the higher ratio at the ends of the rack can help reduce the amount of effort required near the full steering lock, such as when parking. The steering wheel goes from lock to lock in just 2.1 turns.

Technology

The 2026 Jetta GLI is equipped with advanced technology, including an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Wireless App-Connect that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The screen is housed in a floating panel above the center stack. The standard 8-speaker sound system includes a subwoofer. The infotainment system also includes Bluetooth connectivity and Car-Net.
