Volkswagen Currywurst: It Even Has Its Own Part Number

199 398 500 A is one of the most famous part numbers ever to exist, yet very few people outside of employees for Volkswagen would know why. Part numbers are a group of numbers and letters that identify specific vehicle parts and accessories. A Factory Just for Sausage 

Since 1973, Volkswagen has been making its own brand of currywurst sausage in its own factory, the Wolfsburg Volkswagen Plant, for employees to eat in the company’s factory cafeterias. Part number 199 398 500 A corresponds to Volkswagen Currywurst. Not only is the famous sausage available in restaurants inside VW factories, but a number of restaurants outside of the factories, such as sports stadiums and grocery stores, sell the VW sausage to the public. The German car company also makes a special type of ketchup that pairs perfectly with their sausage.  

Seriously, Volkswagen Really Makes Their Own Sausage? 

While it may seem quite odd that a car manufacturer would make food in a dedicated factory, VW has been doing it since 1938 for their employees due to the remote nature of some of their facilities. This is to help keep the factory staff nourished. Roughly 7 million VW Currywurst sausages are produced annually, with approximately 40% of the sales coming from employees at the company’s six plants throughout Germany. The rest of the 60% are sold to the general public. Sadly, VW Currywurst is not available in the United States due to import laws preventing uncooked meat from entering the country.  

A Documentary by Discovery 

Richard Hammond, otherwise known as Hamster, of Top Gear and The Grand Tour fame, took a tour of the Wolfsburg plant with Discovery UK and even got to produce some currywurst sausages himself on the assembly line. In a discussion with one of the plant workers while eating the sausage, Richard asked, “How important are these sausages to the factory, I mean, if you stopped making them, what would happen?” The expert sausage maker replied, “It’s very important. When you don’t make the sausages, we don’t produce cars.” 

Employees Really Love Their Currywurst Sausage 

During the production of the documentary by Richard Hammond and Discovery UK, it was revealed that 2.6 million VW Currywurst sausages are eaten by VW employees every year, and more than 6.8 million pounds of the sausage have so far been produced.  

New Vegetarian and Vegan Options 

Since 2010, Volkswagen has produced a vegetarian currywurst and, not long ago, added a vegan currywurst sausage to production.
