If You Are Not Ready For An EV The Jetta GLI Might Be For You
The 2025 Jetta GLI is an underrated gem in the current lineup of VW vehicles. With just the right balance of style, comfort, performance, size, and fuel economy, very few cars can argue that they are the perfect daily driver for just about anyone quite like the GLI can. In fact, some would say it’s better than the GTI for daily use. However, regardless of where you fall on the GLI vs GTI debate, plenty of car buyers who aren’t quite ready for an EV will see the GLI as the right path.
Engine, Power, and Performance
For 2025, the GLI retains its beloved 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder that is shared with the GTI, dubbed the EA888. This engine puts out 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque and is mated to either a smooth-shifting 6-speed manual transmission or a quick-reacting 7-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic. Between the engine and the relatively light weight of the GLI (3,537 lbs), Car and Driver say the 4-door VW will easily hit 60 mph in six seconds flat. With a modest entry point of just $34,395, the GLI is a performance car bargain.
A Review by Tom’s Guide
Well-respected tech review website Tom’s Guide recently had the pleasure of spending time behind the wheel of the tweaked and updated 2025 VW Jetta GLI. The writer came away believing this could be the right vehicle to replace his aging Toyota Corolla as the GLI averaged 33.5 mpg in 250 miles of driving, which is better than the 30 mpg his Corolla achieves. Then there was the performance. A Toyota Corolla will never be mistaken for a “fun” car to drive. The GLI, though, is a great sporty sedan to drive in all situations.
The Performance of An EV For Less
Interestingly, Tom’s Guide remarked how the GLI was better than previous hybrid vehicles they have tested and that the straight-line speed and overall performance reminded them more of an EV than a gas-powered car simply because of how effortlessly the 2.0-liter EA888 engine gets the car up and moving saying, “Impressively, the Jetta GLI Autobahn with automatic transmission drives very much like the majority of EVs I test thanks in part to its 228 hp turbocharged engine that easily gets to top speed in no time at all — with less of the gear shifting that is still problematic with the hybrids and PHEVs (plug-in electric vehicle) I’ve tested. Meaning, it barely feels like a struggle going from a dead stop to cruising speed.”
Plenty of Space for the Family
When it comes to interior space, the Jetta, whether the GLI or not, has an impressive amount of volume and features. The high-end ambient lighting impressed Tom’s Guide, as they felt the lighting inside the vehicle was the perfect intensity as well as an expression of creativity in terms of how much you can tweak the colors. The author found the rear seat space ample for three full-sized adults, and he was able to fit his electric scooter in the trunk with loads of room to spare.
Excellent Safety
Like all Volkswagen models, the GLI comes with a brilliant set of standard safety and advanced driver-assist features via IQ.Drive, which includes Travel Assist (semi-automated driving assistance), Front Assist (Forward Collision Warning and Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Monitoring), Active Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Traffic Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Stop and Go, Lane Assist, and Emergency Assist (semi-automated vehicle assistance in a medical emergency).
The Final Verdict
So, what was the final verdict for the 2025 GLI? Simply put, Tom’s Guide thinks this should be your next car if you can’t swing an EV: “EVs are expensive, which is why many people today are still considering buying gas-powered cars. The 2025 Volkswagen Jetta GLI Autobahn is one of the few I’d recommend due in part to its affordable cost and how it handles like an EV thanks to its turbocharged engine. And while I’d be more inclined to spend a little more for a hybrid car, I think its fuel economy holds up very well considering it’s a performance sedan.”
