The Volkswagen ID.7 will be the midsize luxury sedan model of the brand’s electric ID range of vehicles and is anticipated to appear in our Bud Brown Volkswagen showroom in 2024, introducing a host of innovative technologies, which even include innovation in climate control. VW anticipates the ID.7 will have the smartest climate control system in the industry.

When viewing the stylish dash of the prototype model, you will notice the thin horizontal vents across the dash have no adjustment knobs. This is because the airflow is electronically controlled, enabling functionality not found in present climate control systems. For example, on hot days, the air conditioning can begin operating when it detects a key fob approaching, so the system is already operating before a driver or passenger enters the car. While this functionality currently exists on some models, the next step is something new. When a door is opened, the air vents will automatically sweep back and forth horizontally to distribute the cold air as quickly as possible.

It Knows Who’s Inside and Where The Sun is Outside

The system will know what seats are unoccupied and can direct airflow only to those which are. Thus, a solo driver is spared the need to reach across the car or behind the seat to close unneeded vents. Via a sensor on the dashtop, the system will track the location and intensity of the sun and direct air temperatures in specific areas of the cabin it knows will be warmer.

These climate functions are all controlled through the large center touchscreen which has been enhanced with new displays and a quicker response time. Specific climate settings can be saved for multiple scenarios. Climate preferences can be set for each driver as identified by their key fob and activated automatically much as seat and mirror position memory controls do today. The system can also be voice-activated so the driver can simply say, “Hello Volkswagen, my hands are cold” to have warmer air automatically directed toward the steering wheel.
