Volkswagen Beetle Dune
There has always been special editions of the Volkswagen Beetle. Rarely does one go from concept to production…to popular demand.
This is why Volkswagen introduced the Beetle Dune special edition. It showed us what a Beetle can be with a bit more fun.
The Beetle Dune was inspired by the past when the original Volkswagen was converted into some seriously fun cars. They were Baja Bugs, which had fat, knobby tires, a raised suspension, and open rear end exposing the engine with a huge exhaust coming out the back. Plus, there were no fenders. Then, there were Dune Buggies, in which the entire body was removed for true open air fun.
Though it may look like a crossroading car, it is certainly not far from its inspiration from the past, However, there is only a suspension height change of 0.4 inches with an overall width extension of just 0.5 inches. Nothing has changed on the Beetle’s suspension, except for the eighteen-inch wheels and all-season tires on board. It still drives like a Beetle.
Outside is where the difference is made. Up front is a front bumper that includes a skid plate and aggressive lower grilles. Plastic cladding is added on the wheel arches, along with a side protector in-between the arches. There is a rear spoiler and other trim that pertains to the Dune’s sporty look.
Inside offers a two-tone black and gray cloth interior with sports countered seats up front. On white or black models, the color-keyed parts of the interior are black. On Sandstorm Yellow models, they are of the same body color. The word “Dune” appears on the lower part of the third spoke of the flat-bottom steering wheel and there is matching or contrasting color trim in the instrumentation. Otherwise, it is the same as all Beetles – right down to the standard MIB II infotainment system with AppConnect.
This model is only available with the 1.8 liter TSI turbocharged engine and the six-speed automatic transmission with front-wheel drive. There is a choice of going with the coupe or convertible.
