2025 Volkswagen Taos Leaves No Stone Unturned

The Volkswagen Taos was first introduced to the American market in 2020, and in just five short years it has captivated the automotive media and crossover buyers alike. The 2025 Taos sees the subcompact crossover add some new standard features, as well as updates to the already attractive appearance and technology. Car and Driver recently had the opportunity to check out the refreshed Taos and came away very pleased.  

Subtle Exterior Tweaks 

Exterior upgrades to the 2025 VW Taos include tweaks to the front- and rear-end designs, including new standard LED projector headlights on all trim levels and standard LED taillights that connect to an illuminated VW badge in the middle of the rear hatch. The front bumper can be optioned with a light bar in the grille surround. Buyers can option the Adaptive Front Lighting System or AFS. Roof rails are also now standard on all models. Rounding out the exterior changes are new sets of available wheels, from 17 up to 19 inches. There are two new exterior colors called Moss Green Metallic and Monterey Blue Pearl.  

A Classy Interior with Updated Tech 

While the exterior brings loads of attention to the Taos, the new interior treatments will truly make anyone fall in love. Volkswagen says the new style carries a more premium fit and finish for owners to appreciate, which includes a completely new dash design with contrasting accent stitching and the floating-style infotainment screen that sees an 8.0-inch touchscreen for all trim levels. The S trim gets an 8.0-inch Digital Cockpit gauge cluster display, while SE and SEL models get Digital Cockpit Pro with a 10.25-inch display. The SE and SEL models also receive standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.  

The Ability to Charge All Devices 

When it’s time to charge your devices, the Taos features two USB-C ports in the center stack area and another in the center console. With 45-watts of fast charging power from each Type-C port, VW made sure that every type of device can be charged, from phones to tablets—and even laptops.  

More Power and an Upgraded Transmission 

The 2025 Taos also gets some love under the hood with a revised 1.5-liter turbocharged and intercooled four-cylinder called the EA211. The outgoing model made 158 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque that was mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The 2025 model makes an extra 16 horsepower for 174 total horses, with torque remaining unchanged. The engine now puts power through an eight-speed automatic transmission that Car and Driver found to be smoother, delivering power better throughout the rev range. The Taos comes standard with front-wheel drive but can be optioned with the brilliant world class 4Motion all-wheel-drive system.  

Great Fuel Economy 

Front-wheel-drive models retain their excellent fuel economy with 28 mpg (city) and 36 mpg (highway), while the 4Motion Taos gets slightly better fuel economy than the 2024 model with 25 (city) and 33 (highway) miles per gallon, a 1-mpg jump each.

So, what did Car and Driver have to say about how the 2025 Taos drives? While the magazine enjoyed the outgoing model in its reviews, the editors very much approve of the latest tweaks and updates to the 2025 model, saying,  “During our brief drive in Texas, the Taos felt well built in a way that its competitors oftentimes don’t—there’s an inherent solidity to its overall fit and finish that we really enjoy. Even the steering-wheel switches are nice … the 2025 updates make the Taos a solid little runabout.”
