The Type 2 “Microbus” remains an icon. It was a transportation solution that was ahead of its time. It laid down a future where families could travel together in one efficient package. It was also developed as the best travel companion ever, as a camper.
Memories of the Type 2 “Microbus” still remain. However, those memories can be relived in a more modern interpretation of the iconic van. Volkswagen calls this the ID.Buzz.
This is a battery-electric van for modern families. Fused with a classic profile, the ID.Buzz marries our past with the future.
You have been waiting for this. It is now here.
Built on the modular electric drive (MEB) platform, the ID.Buzz’s infrastructure is a flat chassis unit upon which the vehicle is built. You can choose between a 282-horsepower rear-wheel drive, single-motor driveline, or a 330-horsepower 4Motion dual-motor set-up with all-wheel drive. The new APP550 rear-mounted motor is a permanent magnet synchronous design with a maximum torque of 406 pound-feet, packaged with the one-speed transmission and a new inverter.
All ID.Buzz models are fed by a 91-kilowatt-hour battery pack located underneath the cabin.
At 100% charge, rear-wheel-drive models will offer 234 miles of EPA-estimated range, and 4Motion all-wheel-drive models will offer 231 miles of EPA-estimated range. You can recharge the ID.Buzz at a DC Fast Charger. It is also easily rechargeable at home with a home-installed Level 2 charger.
The shape looks familiar – over seven decades worth. Yet, it is also modernized with today’s signature Volkswagen elements. The exterior’s oversized VW logo, short overhangs, and expansive greenhouse are paired with a variety of interior and exterior color combinations, allowing customers to express themselves with their ID. Buzz.
Pro S models come standard with a monotone paint scheme in three colors. You can get a choice of eight two-tone classic paint schemes on Pro S Plus models and five two-tone combinations on 1st Edition models.
The Pro S comes standard with 20-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, LED headlights with Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS) and lighted logo and light line, LED taillights, “hello” and “goodbye” head- and taillight animation, and tinted second- and third-row rear windows.
To access the rear two rows of seats and the cargo area, there is Easy Open and Close on the dual power-sliding rear doors. The tailgate provides excellent access to the third row and cargo space.
A manually retractable tow hitch adds functionality and is completely hidden behind the rear bumper when retracted.
The ID.Buzz offers the latest in Volkswagen’s interior design. They are now called “color worlds,” centered on a primary color theme with additional elements complementing the primary color.
For example, Copper gives mid-century modern vibes with rich brown leatherette seats with yellow piping, brown door inserts, and a washed wood-look dash. Another one is Dune, a bright, airy, coastal-inspired interior that pairs light grey leatherette seats with clay-colored piping and door inserts, along with a light wood-look dash. Then, there’s Moonlight, a moody dark interior that includes dark brown leatherette seats with white piping, blue door inserts, and a dark wood-look dash paired with a black headliner.
1st Edition models are equipped with the coastal-inspired interior and heritage-inspired floor mats.
The Pro S comes standard with heated door mirrors with memory, a multifunction touch steering wheel, three-zone Climatronic® automatic climate control, a 5.3-inch ID.Cockpit digital instrument cluster, and an ID.Light driver support system. Plus, there is the Buzz Box removable center console, auto-dimming interior mirror, front driver, passenger, and trunk three-door KESSY® keyless access with proximity unlocking and illuminated front door handles.
Up front, you relax on 12-way power heated and ventilated seats with dual armrests, massage, and memory. For some finishing touches, the ID.Buzz features power folding mirrors, heated second-row outboard seats, a steering wheel, and washer nozzles.
Bench seating is standard on Pro S and Pro S Plus rear-wheel-drive models, and a captain’s chair package with seating for six is available. Captain’s chairs and a heated windshield are standard with Pro S Plus 4Motion AWD and 1st Edition models.
An available Flexboard with two fabric storage bins creates a flat floor when the seats are folded.
Beyond battery-electric performance, the ID.Buzz offers features that are perfect for today’s families.
Standard on the Pro S is a 9-speaker audio system fed by a 12.9-inch infotainment display. The system also includes wireless App-Connect and phone charging, Volkswagen Car-Net® with Wi-Fi capability, eight 45-watt USB-C ports, a 12-volt trunk outlet, and a 150-watt, 110-volt passenger seat outlet.
Also available is a head-up display that projects important information in front of the driver. Also found on the infotainment screen is Area View, which uses the car’s cameras to supplement the driver’s view of what is around the vehicle.
On Pro S Plus and 1st Edition models, audiophiles will appreciate the 700-watt Harman/KardonTM sound system boasting 14 speakers.
Every Volkswagen is developed to keep its occupants safe. That starts with the IQ.DRIVE suite of driver assistance features. This includes standard hands-on Level 2 ready capability with lane centering and a capacitive steering wheel to help make driving easier.
