What to Expect When You Test Drive the 2026 Volkswagen Atlas at Bud Brown Volkswagen

June 1st, 2026 by

You’ve done your research. You know the Atlas has three rows, a 12-inch screen, and more cargo space than most buyers ever use.

But specs on a page only go so far.

Elijah at Bud Brown Volkswagen in Olathe walks you through exactly what happens during a test drive, so you know what to expect before you ever pull into the lot.

When you get here, go straight to the cars.

Our Atlas inventory is in the middle section of the lot. You’re welcome to walk through and see what you like before coming inside.

Here’s how to tell new from used at a glance: new Atlas models have the window sticker (Monroney label) on the side window. Used vehicles currently have green hang tags in the windshield–but this may change depending on sales, seasonal hangtag color changes, etc. Just check for the Monroney Label in the window to see if it’s new or not.

Someone might come out and say hi. That’s just us making sure you don’t have any questions. Take your time.

Coming Inside and Getting Set Up

Found something you want to drive? Just come inside and ask for a sales person–if one didn’t meet you out on the lot already.

They’ll scan your driver’s license, grab the keys, and you can either have them pull the vehicle up front, or you could walk out on the lot with them.

If the right trim or color isn’t on the lot, no problem. We can pull up inventory on the computer and look at what’s in transit or available nearby. You can always test drive a similar model to test things like the drivetrain, the overall feel and design of the vehicle, and other things that don’t change across trims and colors.

The goal is getting you in the right car. Not just the closest one.

What to Look For During the Drive

The 2026 Atlas is a big SUV. A few things are worth paying specific attention to:

How it accelerates. The Atlas has a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. It makes 269 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. That’s plenty for daily driving and highway merges. Pay attention to how it responds from a stop, though. Turbo engines feel different than what some buyers are used to.

The third row. If this is a family purchase, actually sit back there. Fold it, unfold it. See how the second row has to move to reach it. The Atlas is one of the better three-row options in its class, but your family’s situation is what matters.

The infotainment. Standard 12-inch touchscreen. 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. While you’re on the road, actually use the system. You’ll interact with it every day.

How it handles its size. The Atlas drives smaller than it looks. Take some turns. Try parking it. Most buyers are surprised by how manageable it is.

AWD (if it’s on your list). Kansas City winters are real. If 4Motion AWD matters to you, make sure you’re in an AWD model and get a feel for how it handles.

After the Test Drive

No pressure when you get back.

If you loved it and want to look at numbers, we’ll sit down and figure out what works. Lease, finance, trade-in, monthly payment. Whatever your situation is, we can work through it.

Want to test drive a second Atlas in a different trim? We can do that.

Want to compare it to something else on the lot? Also fine.

Want to go home and think about it? That’s okay too. A lot of buyers do. This is a real purchase and it should feel right.
