What Are the Differences Between the 2026 Volkswagen Taos and Tiguan?

June 5th, 2026 by

It has been said recently that the 2026 Volkswagen Taos and the Tiguan look identical. However, they are two very distinct SUVs in different size classes.

Because they follow the latest Volkswagen design language, showing a bold face, with a lower air intake grille and LED lighting elements, they have a similar look. In the rear, they also use similar LED taillight designs, including an illuminated logo. These elements create a contemporary signature that distinguishes a Volkswagen from everything else on the road. Yet, the 2026 Taos and 2026 Tiguan are very different in every way.

It comes down to size – the Taos is the smaller of the two. It is shorter by 8.5 inches, with a 4-inch difference in wheelbase between the two. The overall height of the Taos is two inches lower, with a ground clearance just 3/5 of an inch lower. The overall width is about the same, just a half-inch difference.

When you step inside, you will feel the difference between the 2026 Taos and Tiguan. Dimension-wise, there are four more cubic feet of passenger space in the 2026 Tiguan than in the 2026 Tiguan. The extra space can be found in the rear seat area, with about 2.5 inches more legroom back there.

However, did you know that there is more cargo space in the 2026 Taos than in the Tiguan? With the rear seats up, the smaller Volkswagen offers just over a cubic foot of space. Fold the rear seats down, and the 2026 Taos can take up to seven more cubic feet of cargo.

Underneath the hood, the 2026 Taos has a turbocharged 1.5-liter engine that offers 174 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. In turn, it can earn up to an EPA-rated 28 MPG in the city and 31 MPG on the highway. The 2026 Tiguan offers two turbocharged 2.0-liter engines. The standard engine has 201 horsepower, while the enhanced version in the SEL R-Line Turbo is rated for 268 horsepower. Fuel economy figures are slightly lower in the 2026 Tiguan by at least 2 MPG.

These are just some comparisons based on the specification sheet. However, you have to really take a closer look at both of our SUVs to see the difference. Then choose the right one that fits your daily routine.  The smaller, nimbler 2026 Taos is a great value overall, while the 2026 Tiguan is what growing families want at a great price.
