​​Volkswagen Restores T2 Bus Caught in California Wildfires​

The Volkswagen Type 2 Bus, commonly referred to as the T2, is one of the classic vehicles for which Volkswagen is known. From 1967 to 1979, the T2 became a pop culture icon, debuting during the “Summer of Love” and the “flower power” era, which featured vibrant colors and peaceful messaging. The Type 2 is also the main inspiration behind the all-electric ID. The 2025 California Wildfires 

During the horrific wildfires that spread to more than 59,000 acres, or 90 square miles, throughout January of 2025, there was little hope for those affected. Each day brought a new set of challenges, whether it was the fire itself, the winds, or especially the air quality. For as far as the eye could see, there was only destruction. But one slight gleam of happiness and hope was an image showing what appeared to be an Ocean Blue and Pastel White VW Type 2 bus that was unaffected in the wake of the carnage.  

The Photo That Captured a Nation 

The image by an Associated Press photographer was called the “magic bus”, and thus a movement was born. People often cling to small things that offer just a moment of normalcy or hope in times of trouble. This image was a symbol of hope for many throughout the country.  

VW Restores Azul  

Thanks to a community of VW enthusiasts, Volkswagen was able to track down the owner, Megan Weinraub, and learned the condition of the vehicle. Once it was safe to do so and with the permission of local officials and emergency personnel, the 1977 Type 2, named Azul, was collected and sent to Volkswagen Group of America’s Oxnard Facility for a complete restoration. The Oxnard facility is where Volkswagen keeps all its classic and historic vehicles, making this the ideal place to give a new lease on life to the fire-ravaged vehicle.

“From the moment we first saw Azul, our goal was to ensure the story of the vehicle wasn’t erased by the fires, but brought back to life by restoring it, reuniting it with its owner, and returning it to the road,” said Gunnar Wynarski, Vehicle Technician at Volkswagen Group of America’s Oxnard Facility. “While this special restoration project was a technical challenge, what mattered most was keeping the soul of the vehicle intact.” 

A Reintroduction to the Public at the LA Auto Show 

Once finished, Volkswagen showed off the restored bus to the community at the 2025 LA Auto Show in November and December. The company stated that the restoration accounted for 50% of the vehicle, with more than 900 parts replaced or repaired, and involved a total of over 2,080 hours of work.
