Time for Spring Maintenance on Your Volkswagen

March 15th, 2025 by

Every year, Kansas City gets its share of winter. Snowstorms, freezing rain, icy roads—you name it. Some years are better than others. Then there are some years we would rather forget about winter.

Regardless, we are faced with roads that have been salted over again and again. Potholes will appear on our streets and highways across Kansas and Missouri. In turn, those potholes will do damage to tires, wheels, and suspension systems. That’s one of the biggest problems—among others—that could make the transition to spring hard on your Volkswagen. How do you make sure your Volkswagen is ready for spring?

There are plenty of parts that get a lot of use during the winter. One such part is your windshield wiper blades. Using them to try to clear snow and ice off windshields instead of a snow brush or an ice scraper adds more wear to the wiper blades. Check out the condition of your wiper blades, both front and back. If need be, go ahead and replace them.

During the winter, you will experience lower air pressure in your tires. In some cases, you could see some wear and tear. Make sure that your tire pressure is at the proper level. Check for wear on your tires. Make sure you check the spare tire, too!

If you have been dealing with potholes on our roads, this is a great opportunity to check out your suspension system. A simple push down on the body above each wheel will do. If you notice something off on your shocks or other suspension components, you might want to see if there’s any damage. You should also check the condition of your wheels, as they can be damaged when hitting potholes.

Other things you should look for are simply underneath your hood. Check the condition of the fluids and their levels, including windshield washer, coolant, oil, and brake fluids. Replace and fill up when needed.

Check your filters, too. Volkswagen vehicles have specific air, air filtration, oil, and fuel filters. If any of these are dirty or unable to do their job as intended, please have them replaced.

Your regular battery is responsible for keeping the starter going and the lights turned on. You definitely want to check its condition, especially when you have some hard cranks on cold mornings. If the battery is not charging correctly, it is time to get it replaced for spring.
