The Taos is one of Volkswagen’s newest vehicles, but it’s already one of its more popular models. The subcompact SUV ranks highly in comparison tests, with Cars.com recently calling it an affordable SUV with a likable powertrain and a spacious interior.

The Taos comes in three trims for 2024: S, SE, and SEL. All models get VW’s IQ.Drive driver assistance tech and VW added new features to the base trim in 2024, including rain-sensing wipers, automatic high beams, and a heated steering wheel. Pricing starts at $23,995 plus a $1,495 destination charge.

Power comes from a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, producing 158 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. It’s paired with a seven-speed automatic transmission and front- or all-wheel drive, and the powertrain returns up to 32 mpg on the highway in its most efficient form.

The Taos seats five, and its long wheelbase affords almost as much space as the VW Tiguan, which is one class larger. The S trim comes with black cloth upholstery, while the SE is available in gray or black. The SEL brings a two-tone interior with a few different color options. Each trim comes with contrast stitching that helps the interiors stand out.

A 6.5-inch touchscreen comes standard, bringing Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The SE and SEL trims step up to an 8-inch display that offers navigation and wireless app connect features. Bluetooth, HD radio, SiriusXM radio, and more come with both displays.

VW also includes its excellent Digital Cockpit system, which brings an 8-inch gauge cluster to the S and a 10.25-inch display to the other two trims. The system brings maps, vehicle information, and other functions to the gauge cluster, allowing the driver to get a complete picture without taking their eyes far off the road.
