If you own or are planning to own an electric vehicle, of which there are plenty already available on the market – including the Volkswagen ID.4, then you’re going to need to set up a home vehicle charging system to make sure your car or utility vehicle gets the power it requires. There are three different types of vehicle charging systems, we’ll go over the differences and give you a little insight into setting one up for yourself.

Level 1 Charging System

The most basic vehicle charging system doesn’t require a lot of setup. Level 1 charging is performed with a 120-volt outlet, which is the basic wall plug you can find in your house or, hopefully, garage. As long as you have an open outlet near where you plan to park your EV, then you’ll have your home vehicle charging system set up

Level 2 Charging System

For a Level 2 Charging System, however, you’ll need something a little more special than that. Level 2 charging utilizes a 240-volt circuit to enhance the speed at which your vehicle can be charged. Some homes do have outlets like these already – for example, in your laundry room, as they’re what most dryers require. Unless you have one in your garage, however, you’re likely going to want to hire an electrician to run a new one so you can park and charge your vehicle at home.

The charging unit itself will vary based on manufacturer and such, but will likely be at least $300. You’ll also have to budget for the electrical work, which could run up to $2,000 depending on the age and difficulty of your home/garage.

Level 3 Charging System

Naturally, a Level 3 Charging System is the top of the line, but you’re not going to get one of these at your home. They’re designed for commercial use, which means they’re the kinds of EV chargers you find at gas stations and other public locations.
