Motor Trend Names GTI and Golf R as its 2026 Car of the Year

The industry may be dominated by SUVs and crossovers, but each year, Motor Trend reviews the latest models of sedans, coupes, hatchbacks, and any other body style still considered a “car” for itsprestigious Car of the Year Award. For the 2026 edition, Bud Brown Volkswagen is pleased to announce that Motor Trend selected the 2026 GTI and Golf R.  

This marks the third Car of the Year award bestowed upon the Golf across the eight generations of the model, the first being in 1985 with the introduction of the second-generation GTI and the first all-wheel drive models. The second award came for the seventh-generation 2013 Golf model line. Although the 2026 Golf isn’t a major update of the eighth-generation Golf, Motor Trend considered the changes significant enough to include the GTI and R among 14 other contenders, and they liked them enough to award it this year’s Golden Caliper Trophy. 

“For 50 years, the Golf lineup has been the enthusiast heartbeat of Volkswagen in America—a family of vehicles that showed that practicality and driving excitement could be mutually compatible,”said Kjell Gruner, President and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America. “This recognition from Motor Trend celebrates not just the Golf’s success, but also the community of drivers who have defined the performance Golf as the hot hatch.” 

The 2026 model received the award mainly for being a skillful update of the classic GTI and R formula, offering pure fun-to-drive qualities in a practical package that can comfortably seat four and five when needed, with a spacious cargo area. Sure, many SUVs and crossovers can boast practical features, including VW’s own lineup, but few can match the driving excitement of the GTI or Golf R. “Authentic and spirited, the Golf continues to inspire the same enthusiasm it has since its debut,” stated Motor Trend’s editors.   

It is worth pointing out that Motor Trend Car of the Year contestants aren’t just judged directly against each other, but rather how they compete in their own vehicle segments based on Motor Trend’ssix key criteria:  

• Advancement in design 
• Engineering excellence 
• Performance of the intended function 
• Value 
• Safety 
• Efficiency 

Since every new Golf’s design is evolutionary and carries strong aspects of past models, “Advancement of Design” may seem like the least likely place for the GTO and R to excel, but Motor Trendrecognizes the challenge of updating an icon. “…VW managed to evolve the Golf without alienating its devoted following or straying from its identity. “   

They praised the interior update, which features the standard 12.9-inch center touchscreen and more intuitive software, including a voice command system that controls various vehicle operations. And though a big fan of buttons and knobs, the publication found the dash’s capacitive-touch slider for audio and climate functions remarkably effective.  

The Golf R is the muscle car of the two, while the GTI strikes a balance between performance and handling. Motor Trend states that “each fulfills its mission with precision and confidence.” They also point out that, despite their performance focus, each car can be comfortable and composed in non-performance driving situations. “Most cars in this segment are hyper-focused and good at just one or maybe two things at most—the Golfs are very much jacks-of-all-trades.” Overall, these are extremely enjoyable cars that demand little in the way of a compromise as a practical daily driver.
