2024 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport

Overview

Just as its name implies, the Atlas Cross Sport starts with the Atlas 7-seater but gets shortened about 5 inches, has a lower and more sporty roofline, and more aggressive trim to become a spacious 5-seat crossover. The Atlas Cross Sport received a notable refresh for 2024, including new front-end styling and an updated engine to replace the two previously available engines. The changes extend to the interior with a stylish new instrument panel design which comes standard with both the Digital Cockpit Pro driver information center and 12-inch center touchscreen. Additional standard features include Climatronic®, IQ DRIVE, and notable upscale niceties such as ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and an Adaptive Front-lighting System.

Performance

All 2024 Atlas CrossSport models are powered by the new “Evo4” turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4 TSI® engine. Major enhancements to this new engine include new fuel injectors, increased turbo pressure, and a redesigned balance shaft. At 269 horsepower, it has 34 horsepower than the previous 4-cylinder engine and is just 3 horses shy of the previous V6 engine. Its 273 lb-ft of peak torque is actually greater than the V6 engine by 7 lb-ft. The peak also comes at a much lower rpm (1600-4500 rpm vs 3.600), making the engine much more satisfying to drive in all situations. Mileage is improved over the similarly-powered V6 with an EPA estimate of 20/27/23 for front-wheel drive models and 19/26/22 for all-wheel drive models.

Exterior

The first thing you will notice about the 2024 Atlas Cross Sport is the all-new front-end design. The grille grows down into the front bumper and appears as a single unified piece with a cross-hatched mesh. On each side are 900-lumen LED headlights that include the Adaptive front-lighting System with swivel-mounted lamps to improve road illumination when taking on curves and corners. LED daytime running lights surround the headlights and on all but the base SE, form a light bar across the top of the grille and an illuminated VW badge. Silver overhead roof rails, automatic headlamps, and rain-sensing windshield wipers are standard across the lineup

Wheel designs are new for 2024. The base SE gets 18-inch machined aluminum alloys bumping up to 20-inch machine-finish wheels for the SE with Technology and the SEL. The SEL Premium R-Line wears 21-inch two-tone machined alloys. All Atlas Cross Sport models have 6.3 inches of ground clearance and departure angles of 20.8 and 25.1/24.9 degrees (front/rear), and a coefficient of drag of 0.34.

Interior

Changes for 2024 are even more apparent inside with a new elegant dash design. Horizontal surfaces sweep into the door panels for an integrated upscale appearance. The literal centerpiece of the dash is the standard 12-inch floating infotainment touchscreen. It complements the standard driver’s 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro with four views—including full-screen navigation for equipped models with the onboard navigation system. Adding to the ambiance at night is the available 30-color ambient lighting system.

Atlas Cross Sport has a maximum cargo volume of 77.6 cu-ft behind the front-row seats when the rear seats are folded down, and 40.3 cu-ft when all seats are up. Everyone sits well in the Atlas Cross Sport with even the base SE including a 8-way power driver’s seat as well as heating and ventilation for both front seats. SE seating surfaces are V-Tex leatherette, with leather for SEL models and leather with a quilted diamond pattern on the SELPremium R-Line. Another main attraction of the SEL Premium R-Line model is the Harmon-Kardon® Premium Audio System. It features 400 watts, and 12 channels with two speakers in each door, effects speakers in the D-pillars, a center mid-range speaker, and of course, a subwoofer for a total of 12. The channels are designed to present the acoustics of a live performance.

Technology

The standard digital cockpit and 12-inch information touchscreen set the tone for Atlas Cross Sport’s technology. Easily viewed in the Digital cockpit is information on car status, driving data, phone information, driver assistance features, and navigation when equipped. All models feature four USB-C ports, with all but the review mirror port providing 45-watt fast charging.

SE w/ Technology models and above offer SiriusXM with 360L, which combines satellite and streaming content delivery into a single, cohesive in-vehicle entertainment experience for a three-month trial and subsequently available by subscription. The system monitors choices to provide “For You” recommendations to help you to discover more of what you love. It also includes an enhanced sports play-by-play offering that facilitates finding your favorite team when it’s game time.

Safety

IQ.DRIVE is now standard on all Atlas Cross Sport models. The system utilizes front and rear radar, a front camera, and several ultrasound sensors to enable features such as:

  • Travel Assist (semi-automated driving assistance)
  • Front Assist (Forward Collision Warning and Automatic Emergency
  • Braking with Pedestrian Monitoring)
  • Active Side Assist (Blind Spot Monitor)
  • Rear Traffic Alert
  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) Stop and Go
  • Lane Assist (Lane Keeping System)
  • Emergency Assist (semi-automated vehicle assistance in a medical emergency)

Also present is Volkswagen’s Intelligent Crash Response System. Should a collision occur, it will automatically shut off the fuel pump, unlock the doors, and switch on the hazard lights.
